Generally, bedrooms should have a warm, soothing and peaceful feel to the space. Bedroom furniture made of wood or has a soothing colour, for example soft blue or beige, is best because of the associated calming sensation.
Loud colours, such as bold reds or yellows, should be avoided to maintain a softer feeling associated with a bedroom area. Lastly, remember that bedrooms are meant for relaxation but should be functional since you will be using the space every day.
1. Bed
When decorating a bedroom, the most important part is the bed! It is easiest to select the bed you want first, then design the rest of your bedroom around it. Some things to consider when selecting a bed is size, storage, headboard type, height, colour and, most importantly, comfort!
2. Closets & Dressers
Usually the bedroom is meant for dressing too, not only sleeping. If your bedroom has a closet, this is a perfect spot for clothing and possibly other storage. Complementary items for your closet storage could be decorative bins/boxes, shoe racks and hanging storage units. Closet or no closet, dressers are an excellent addition to a bedroom. When selecting a dresser, it is important to consider the aesthetics, although, don’t forget the functionality. A dresser is something you will use every day; smooth sliding drawers and spaciousness is crucial.
3. Bedside Tables
As a general rule, the bed side table shouldn’t be higher than the bed as it will look awkward and be difficult to use. Remember to consider how much you will be using the side table. If you want some extra storage, drawers are a must.
4. Lighting & Curtains
Before picking the lighting and curtains you want for your bedroom, consider the natural light you have already. If your room does not have a lot of natural light at any point of the day, more lighting will be necessary, a ceiling light is a good place to start. Bedrooms with too much light, may not need as much lights but will definitely require curtains.
Lamps for side tables and for the floor are a nice touch to any bedroom space. Be sure to pick light bulbs with lower lumens (otherwise known as brightness) because they will provide warmer light that is more relaxing for sleep. Also, dimmers can be added to light fixtures to adjust brightness throughout the day.
5. Rugs
If your room is not already carpeted, adding an area rug is an option for additional comfort. Some things to consider are the pile height (thickness of the rug), shape and colour. Thicker carpets have a more cozy and soft feel whereas thinner carpets are simpler and subtle.
Carpets can be a decorative feature, however, if your room is already full of décor, shy away from carpets with busy patterns to avoid making the space too hectic. Light coloured carpets are not ideal for bedrooms since it will be heavily used thus susceptible to discolouration. On the contrary, dark carpets can make the room feel small and enclosed, it’s best to find a middle ground!
6. Art & Décor
Once all your furniture has been selected, it’s time for the finishing touches. Adding art and décor to your bedroom is the best way to personalize the space. Wall art, prints and photographs are great additions to characterize the space. Other décor ideas include mirrors, jewelry stands, plants, clocks, vibrant bedding and book shelves. This is the part where you can let your artistic side show!
